About

Rise & Change is a non-profit cultural organisation working with children, young people and communities through art, dance, storytelling and creative collaboration.

We create safe and inclusive spaces where people can express themselves, share stories and build confidence — especially for those who are often left out of cultural and creative spaces.

Storytelling is at the core of our work. We believe lived experiences matter, and that art and movement can be powerful tools for making voices visible. Through visual art, dance, workshops and community-based projects, participants are supported to explore identity, creativity and belonging.

We work in collaboration with schools, families, artists and local actors. Our activities take place in schools, community spaces and public environments, and are shaped together with the people who take part.

Rise & Change is rooted in care, creativity and participation. We don’t just run activities — we build relationships, trust and long-term cultural spaces where people can grow, connect and feel at home.

Founder

Bruce Karim (Abdul Karim Katungi)

Founder of Rise & Change Bruce Karim is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose practice moves between painting, mixed media and movement-based artistic processes. Born in Uganda and now based in Sweden, his work explores themes of identity, transformation, rhythm and collective experience. His artistic approach often combines large-scale painting with physical movement, allowing gesture, energy and presence to become part of the visual language of the work. Through this process, painting becomes not only an image but also a trace of movement, memory and lived experience. Alongside his artistic practice, Bruce founded Rise & Change, a cultural platform and non-profit organisation that uses art as a tool for empowerment, expression and community building. Through workshops, exhibitions and collaborative projects, Rise & Change creates spaces where children and young people can explore creativity, share their stories and build confidence.

Bruce’s work has been presented in both solo and group exhibitions and includes projects in public spaces and participatory artistic environments. His practice is deeply rooted in community engagement, working with schools, youth centres and cultural organisations to create accessible artistic experiences. Through both his personal artistic work and Rise & Change, Bruce continues to explore how art, movement and storytelling can bring people together and inspire positive change in communities.

Impact

Rise & Change works to create meaningful cultural experiences for children and young people. Through workshops, exhibitions and collaborative projects, participants are encouraged to explore creativity, build confidence and express their stories.

Our activities bring together artists, youth and communities, creating spaces where people can meet, learn from one another and grow. By working closely with schools, cultural spaces and local partners, we aim to strengthen participation in culture and make artistic expression accessible to more people.

Each project is shaped by the voices and ideas of the young people who take part, ensuring that creativity becomes a tool for empowerment, connection and social change.

How we develop projects

Our projects grow through dialogue with young people, communities and collaborators. Activities are often shaped together with participants, allowing creativity and shared experiences to guide the process. This approach ensures that every project reflects the voice and needs of the people or youths invloved.

Artistic Foundation

Rise & Change is artist-led and rooted in contemporary artistic practice. Visual art, movement and storytelling are used as tools for exploration, participation and cultural expression.

Through these activities, Rise & Change continues to create spaces where creativity, community and cultural participation can grow. Our work is shaped together with the young people and communities who take part.
